Important Pieces Of Equipment In The Construction Industry

Friday, May 30, 2014

In the construction industry, there are many different pieces of construction equipment, each for specific application. From compact to extremely large, from lightweight to very heavy, the construction equipment are being manufactured for different purposes and are most efficient for specific applications. Some machines are used for excavation purposes, while some others for lifting or loading equipment and materials.  There are few categories of construction equipment: excavation equipment, compaction equipment, lifting equipment, mixing equipment and many others. In addition of this article, you can find the two most versatile and most important pieces of equipment in the construction industry.

An Excavator

The excavator is one of the most common pieces of construction equipment that can be found on a job site, simply because it is extremely versatile. A typical excavator consists a cabin for the operators, an articulated arm and a bucket. The bucket is a customizable, as each operator can choose one that is most suitable for the need. The excavator can be used for various purposes, including digging trenches, foundations and holes, cutting work, forestry work, material handling, demolishing work, heavy lifting and landscaping. There are lots of excavator types, including crawler, long-reach and suction excavator.

  • A crawler excavator is one of the most common and most well-known excavators in the whole world. Its primary use is in the mining industry, because of its big size and incredible horsepower.
  • As its name states, the long-reach excavator is a typical excavator with a long reach/arm. An excavator with a long reach is most efficient for demolition work, as it is able to reach the top of buildings and crumple the structures from there.
  • Suction excavator, also known as a vacuum excavator, is an excavator type that efficiently clears debris from ground level through its suction pipe. As it is very efficient for removing underground elements, its most common use is in the mining industry.

A Crane

The cranes are well-known heavy machines to all, as they can be very commonly seen. If you still do not know what is crane, you remember that big machine that was lifting heavy materials in your street, right? Well, that is a crane: a big lifting machine that is able to lift thousands of tons in hundreds of meters in height. The cranes can lift very heavy equipment and materials to areas that would otherwise be impossible to access and operate on. Not only lifting, but the cranes can also move the loads in all directions.

However, there are many different types of cranes and each type is specifically designed for specific application. There are small cranes and large, powerful and extremely powerful cranes, with smaller and huge lifting capacity, each meant for specific purposes. Also, there are many cranes attachments, including sheaves, wire ropes, wire rope slings and chains.

These two pieces of equipment are the most commonly used ones in the construction industry, although there are many other small and large machines with different uses. And remember this, not having all pieces of equipment improves your productivity, but the right ones.

Crane Rigging Is Very Important

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Construction industry is one of the most dangerous industries in the world, as it includes heavy construction machinery and construction materials, such as cranes. Cranes are indeed extremely useful machines on every construction job site, because they are capable of extremely heavy lifts and moving them into the desired locations. One of the most important aspects when operating a crane is the rigging, regardless of the brand. In fact, even the most popular brands such as Kato cranes require rigging to ensure balance and prevent tipping over. The Kato cranes may come with numerous, high-tech and innovative safety features, but the rigging is a major factor that boosts the overall safety of the Kato cranes and increases work efficiency.

People involved in the construction industry know how important is rigging and understand all aspects of rigging safety. Before starting any lifting job, the crane rigging safety must be considered, in order to get the job done in time and in the most efficient and safest manner. Unfortunately, many crane accidents happen because of not paying attention on the rigging. For example, a construction crew of 5 workers and one bystander in Melbourne, Australia, have been killed when a large crane fell down. This event was catastrophic and took 6 lives, injured over 15 workers and demolished few homes in the near area. Of course, the event was followed by a series of court cases against the construction company, the crane company and the riggers.

This is only one of the many cases, so it is the right time the crane members to start paying attention on the crane rigging, simply because is extremely important. The rigging should be inspected before each use, in order to make sure that it is safe. If a defect is detected, the rigging should be immediately removed from the job site so not to present a threat for the employees. Speaking of inspection, not only the rigging should be regularly inspected, but the whole crane. The crane must be in top-notch condition before it starts to work and with a proper inspection it will be best checked.

Although the rigging seems very simple to take care of, it demands a specific expertise for proper operation. So, before starting any lifting operation, contact someone who has a lot of understanding of proper Kato cranes rigging to ensure the safety of the operator and the rest of the crew at the job site.

Tips On How To Safely Operate Your Mini Crane

Thursday, May 22, 2014

Although many crane operators know how to properly operate a mini crane, crane accidents happen too often. Maybe because they do not pay too much or underestimate the size of the mini cranes, however, there are many precautions they can undertake in order to increase the safety of the operation. Here are my tips how to safely operate your mini crane.

Why 400kg Ute Cranes?

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Ute cranes are the most efficient cranes for lighter lifting applications. With small lifting capacity, ute cranes are the perfect addition for farmers, tradesmen and delivery drivers, to name a few. Ute cranes provide quick lifts and make the loading and unloading just as easy as its size seems. They can be easily integrated into a deck of a truck, so the operators will have a high power-to-weight ratio. The weight of ute cranes allows easy transportation. There are many different types of ute cranes and their main difference is the lifting capacity. The suggested lifting capacity of ute cranes is 400k.

Ute cranes with lifting capacity of 400kg allows effortless hoisting of heavy items onto the vehicles of the farmers or tradesmen. They are usually lightweight and spare the operators from back sores by providing quick lifts of objects that weight up to 400kg. These ute cranes are usually capable to fully rotate for 360 degrees and require only one operator for installing, transporting, operating and removal. Most commonly, the ute cranes with such capacity are mounted on trucks, because of their versatility and capabilities.

Most ute cranes with 400kg lifting capacity feature a pivot tube adaptor and a crane jib of about 10kg, which are permanently fixed, or stowed away in order to leave more free floor space. Both parts are mounted in a specific plate, bolted directly to the trucks, allowing only one person to operate the ute crane. Usually, ute cranes are made from structural aluminium and are anodized in order to be corrosion resistant. So, to set up a ute crane of this type the operators might need 1 minute maximum from folded position. Thanks to their mounting options, these ute cranes can be utilized anywhere a lift is needed.

Last, but not the least, 400kg ute cranes must feature stabilizers. They need a support underneath, especially when lifting loads heavier than 100kg. With all these features and options in mind, it is easy to see why 400kg ute cranes are the worthiest investment a contractor can make.

Choosing The Right Wire Rope For Your Crane

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

To properly operate a mobile crane, having the right wire ropes is not the only thing that maters, but still, it plays a crucial role. But to choose the right wire ropes, you need to have the right kind of knowledge and at least a little bit of crane experience. Knowing which wire ropes are the right ones for you means you understand several types of wire ropes and their best use. In addition of this article, you will find very important information to help you choose easier and wiser.

Every application is most suitable to one type of wire ropes, but how to find out which one will work best for you?
Wire ropes have specific characteristics that provide specific performance abilities.
So, to choose best, you need to closely look at the characteristics of the wire ropes.
Here are the most common characteristics that needto be considered when choosing a rope for your mobile crane.

Strength

The strength of wire ropes is most commonly measure in metric tons and it is shown as minimum breaking force. It means that if a mobile crane with a wire rope is placed under tension, the wire rope should break at the equal or higher number of the calculated breaking force of that rope. The calculated breaking force applies for a new and unused wire rope, so that it should never operate at near or at minimum breaking force. During an efficient life of the wire rope, it certainly loses some strength gradually, because of the natural causes.

Fatigue Resistance

Wire ropes that are capable of repeatedly bending under tension are considered as high-fatigue resistant. To increase the resistance of fatigue, the design of wire ropes should include more wires, both rope construction and wire properties. This means that a wire rope made of more wires will be more fatigue resistant than a rope of same size with fewer wires. Additionally, the wire ropes should never bend over sheaves with a small diameter , because it might lead to excessive bending of the wires.

Rotation Resistance

A torque is created once a load is placed on a wire rope. It is normal, because all wire ropes are designed to operate with a load-induced torque. But the torque may cause both single and multiple part hoisting systems to rotate. So, the load-induced torque can be reduced by using a specifically designed wire ropes. Those specific wire ropes add the torque in same direction and use it to minimize the total rope torque.

Ways To Choose A Crane Truck

Crane trucks are widely utilized cranes, as they are very efficient on job sites. In my opinion, the best way to ensure a long and productive working life of the crane trucks is to choose a reliable brand. There are few ways how to select the most reliable and best brand, just click here and you will find them out.
